      Traveling to Italy

If you wish to travel to Italy, you have to check the required entry documents. Conditions may vary according to your country of origin. Find more information in this article…

Legislation and conditions regarding traveling to Italy generally vary according to different countries and nationalities. But the country welcomes, every year, thousands of foreigners and European Union citizens, including young professionals and investors seeking new opportunities in the country. Note that Italy forms part of the Schengen area.

      Requirements
Citizens of the European Union, members of the Schengen area, as well as Swiss and Canadian citizens have to produce a valid passport or an identity card to be authorized to enter the country. Visas apply to foreigners whose home countries have signed an agreement with the Italian government.

Travelers have to indicate their exact destination in Italy, as well as the intended length of stay. The request has to be made at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your home country at least 90 days before the scheduled date of departure. You will have to present a valid reason for your intended stay in Italy.

If you are subject to visa requirement and if you are staying neither in a hotel nor in a holiday accommodation, you are required to register with the local police within 8 days following your arrival in Italy.

      Students and minors
In addition to the documents mentioned above, children traveling alone also have to submit an authorization to leave the country which has to be issued by their home country's authorities. As for students, they must produce an identity card, a passport, as well as their international student card (ISIC) and HI-Hostelling International card if possible. They will thus be eligible to many benefits such as discounts.

      Drivers
Many European citizens also drive to Italy. However, those who do not possess a European driver's license have to obtain an international driver's license before traveling to Italy.

      Vaccination
To date, no particular vaccination is required before traveling to Italy. But an international health card will be requested on your arrival in the country. You are therefore advised to be updated with universal vaccines.
